Another Emergency

Tuesday- 2-23-10 Robbi to the ER this morning when she woke up and discovered she had bleeding varicies. We knew she had esophageal varicies already but so far they have not bled. Its a very serious and life threatening condition when varicies bleed because of the real chance of bleeding to death. More later. Please pray for Robbi.

Robbi, I am praying for you and your family. My sister is going through the same think. Just two weeks ago she almost bled to death with a bleeding varicie. Thank goodness she was awake and not sleeping when it happened. It was such an emergency that the doctor didn't have time to put on scrubs or put her to sleep to do an endoscopy to tie off the varicie. Whe was in icu for about 5 days. She is now back home, back to work and feeling great. Her meld score is currently 11. She has become the most positive person I know. She also has two daughters and is divorced. She has been a single parent fo 18 years raising her girls on her own. She has to work to support her family and keep her insurance. Stay Positive. That really helps her.

I forgot to mention that while she was in the icu they had to do a procedure for portal hypertension called the tips procedure. Everything went well and like I said before she is back to work and feeling great.

Yes we know about the TIPS. I had a bad esophageal bleed prior to my transplant and was puking blood in gallons. I was sure it was the end for me, but got flown to Univ of Md and they ended up tying of my varices and doing the tips also, plus a paaracentesis where they accidently poked my bladder in the process.
I am praying Robbi doesn't have to go thru a bleed like that, thats why I panicked almost when she woke up w/ bloody pillow and shirtsleeves of her pajamas....yikes. Thanks for your encouraging words. Robbi has a very positive personality.

To Robbis Mom,
How long ago did you have your transplant and how long did you have to wait for a liver? As I said before my sister had a major bleed two weeks ago. She was at work at the time and hers was rectally. By the time she got to the hospital which was within about 1/2 hour of the first sign of blood we almost lost her. When she was in ICU they told her she was going to have to undergo all the testing to be put on the transplant list. After she got out of the hospital and went to her Liver specialist he told her since her meld was only 11 she wouldn't even be considered for a liver. It is a shame you have to be on deaths door before anything can be done. Thanks for responding to my comments. I found this websigt just a few days ago. Every morning the first thing I do is check your blog to see how Robbi is doing. She is in my prayers daily.

Amen to that, you do have to be on deaths door before they transplant you it seems. Robbis meld is 20 right now, they said they ,ike to transplant at 22-24 but if an A+ liver comes in, its hers.
I had mine in 2001 which was the last year before the MELD system started. I waited 14 months but the last 2-3 months I don't remember due to the encephalopathy. I was pretty sick. I was sure I would die before I got a liver. As it turned out I was admitted to ICU at my transplant hosp and was to stay there till a liver came in. That was June 3rd. They kept me alive until July 28 when a liver finally became avaialable. I was in a coma June till September. They transplanted me in between there so I woke up all tranplanted but on a ventilator with a trach. I was discharged to rehab in November or so to re-learn to sit and walk.
Robbi will do fine because she is young and otherwise healthy. I was 44 and in poor health when I got mine, which is why I had so much trouble I think.
My transplant was done at a different hospital than where Robbi is listed.
